چکیده

The various interaction forces that govern the stability/flocculation of concentrated suspensions are briefly described. Combination of these interactions result in three main energy-distance curves which determine the final state of the suspension. This ranges from colloidally stable to strongly flocculated (coagulated) suspensions. A schematic representation of the various states of suspensions is given. These states are reflected in the rheology of the suspension which can be investigated using steady state, constant stress (creep) or oscillatory measurements. illustrate the rheology of various systems: (i) those based on hard sphere interaction: (ii) those based on double layer repulsion: (iii) sterically stabilised systems; (iv) flocculated systems either weakly or strongly. Examples are given to

Precipitation Reaction of SDS and Potassium Salts in Flocculation of a Micronized Megestrol Acetate Suspension

In this work attempts were made to evaluate K+-SDS and hydrocolloid polymer-SDS interactions in flocculation of megestrol acetate dispersions to enhancetheir stability as a part of suspension formulation. Different dispersions of micronized megestrol acetate and SDS were prepared. KCl and KH2PO4 and their corresponding sodium salts were added to the dispersions and the preparations were evaluat...

Rheology on the Way from Dilute to Concentrated Emulsions

The short review presents the analysis of the consecutive evolution of the rheology of emulsions starting from dilute systems (behavior of an individual liquid droplet in a continuous liquid phase) till the highly concentrated emulsions, in which droplets loose their spherical shape and become polygons. Along with the increase of the internal phase concentration, this is the transition from a s...

A Population Balance Model for Flocculation of Colloidal Suspensions Incorporating the Influence of Surface Forces

Flocculation is a key unit operation in domestic and industrial water treatment, beneficiation of minerals, dewatering of sludges and in many industrial solid-liquid separation processes. Coagulants and flocculants are commonly employed as additives to induce aggregation and improve subsequent filtration or dewatering operations. The characteristics of these additives have a strong influence on...

Phase Behavior , 3 - D Structure , and Rheology of Colloidal Microsphere – Nanoparticle Suspensions Summer K . Rhodes and Jennifer A . Lewis

A new route for tailoring the behavior of colloidal suspensions through nanoparticle additions is reviewed. Specifically, the interparticle interactions, phase behavior, 3-D structure, and rheological properties of microsphere–nanoparticle mixtures that possess both high charge and size asymmetry are described. Negligibly charged microspheres, which flocculate when suspended alone, undergo a re...
